Out of the 50 different types of Singing Bowls that researches have discovered so far, there are seven or eight basic kind of singing bowls which are used more often in different parts of the world. Each singing bowl has a special characteristic of its own, its own shape and sound. There is still a debate on the classification and naming of these singing bowls among the experts. So the following classification can be different according to some other experts. Here it goes:
THADOBATI TIBETAN SINGING BOWLS:
These are one of the oldest forms of singing bowls which may date back to at least the 15th century. They show considerable sign of usage and are very clearly hand beaten as you can see clear hammer marks on the surface. The engravings on the surface have mostly vanished and the surface isn’t as shiny as found on the other types of singing bowls. Since they are pretty old and the not ideal for professional use, they are good for beginner’s practice. They are usually inexpensive and it can be quite difficult to find a good piece in the market.
Thadobati Tibetan singing Bowls are usually high walled and have a wide flat bottom. They tend to be lumpy and have uneven walls during to basic forging process during those times. The medium bowls have plain lips and the the walls are only slightly thicker. The heave sized bowls have thicker walls and wider lips and sometimes have grooves or sun symbols.
If preserved carefully while keeping them free from stains and blemishes, the heavy Thadobati Tibetan singing Bowls can create superb sounds with unique notes and prove to be a great collector’s item.
