On the fourth day of our Sound Healing and Nada Yoga teacher training in Goa, Swami Sanjeev shares knowledge about ancient civilisations and the importance of occult sciences in these societies. He then entangles us in the magical narration of a Rajputh princess, named Meera. Where she lived was an old woman, who was guarding a statue of Krishna, dressing it every day, worshipping it and guarding it as if it was her very own child. She took her Bhakti Yoga very seriously and for here there was nothing more important in life, than looking after Sri Krishna’s statue.
One day the woman visited Meera’s family in their palace and of course she brought her Krishna statue along. When in a moment of distraction, she left Krishna’s figure out of sight, the little Meera grabbed it and started to play with it. “Don’t do this”, her parents shouted, “Krishna’s statue is not a toy. Give it back to the lady!”
With complete conviction Meera answered, “It is my statue. Krishna is mine.”, and pressing the idol if Krishna on her chest, she ran away from the adults.
In another episode, Meera is witnessing a marriage procession with her mother. She then asks her mother: “Who will be my husband?”
“Don’t worry”, her mother replied and that she would find a husband for Meera, when she would be grown up.”
But Meera was a very stubborn child, and insisted to know the name of her husband. “I want to know now, who is my husband?”
Her mother did not now, what to say to this obstinate girl, and to satisfy her, she finally said: “Krishna”
Meera’s eyes were shining with joy. She already knew that her life would be bound to loving Krishna.
There are many versions and extensions of the story, but one thing is for sure: There was never a more innocent and arduous devotee of Krishna than Meera.
Our practice for this day is Laughter Meditation. First, it felt unnatural to laugh without reason, but soon we go from shy giggles to honest belly laughs, that shake our whole bodies. Laughter really is contagious. Experiencing this 15 minutes laughter meditation is a great way of connecting to each other.
Some benefits of Laugther Meditation are:
-it relaxes you and gives you energy
-reduces stress hormones
-it is a training for your abdominal muscles
-it makes you feel at peace, trusting and full of confidence
-the thought clouds in your mind melt away, as you feel grounded and clear
Heart Chakra Meditation in the Sound Healing and Nada Yoga Teacher Training
In this session Meditation Master Shiva Girish guides us to our hearts, in a beautiful Heart Chakra Meditation.
The Anahata Chakra or heart chakra is the bridge between the lower and the upper chakras. In Sanskrit Anahata means unstruck, because our innermost being cannot be hurt. In this centre joy and love are residing, as well as devotion, compassion and acceptance.
We begin our session with dancing from the heart. The singing of the sound O helps us to settle in a meditative state. For the main meditation we sing the Anahata Chakra sound “Yam”, as if we were pouring love to the universe. The energy we are getting into, in this meditation is gentle, feminine and receptive. It is a practice to become aware of your spiritual heart how you can unfold its gifts.
The Anahata Chakra is also known to be the seat of the Paramatman, of our soul. Thus, the opening of the Heart Chakra is an opening up to the divine. Love is inspiring us to become more than ourselves, to merge into other beings and the whole of creation. To open your heart also means to allow vulnerability, to release sadness or any other feelings that might come up. The practice here is to accept what is, to see the beauty and the divinity of these feelings, which render colour to our human experience…
Listen to your heart, let yourself be guided by it. All the truth you are looking for is inside.
Designing a one-day workshop and dealing with doubt and trust
In this session, we discuss the design of a one-day workshop each of us has worked out. With the feedback of Meditation Master Shiva Girish and the group we are able to adapt and refine the designs of our future workshops.
Being able to design group and individual sessions is a main focus of our training, as Master Shiva Girish wants us to leave the training, fully prepared to be a teacher. Sometimes it is good to dare, to believe in yourself, to jump into the wavy water and learn how to swim!
However, it is not always easy to digest our teacher’s words, even if they seem so easy. Our group is pendulating between the feeling of trust and belief – in ourselves, in the training, in the universe – and the shadow of doubt, which lingers behind it. There are moments, in which fear arises, insecurity and even disconnection.
These are the moment we need to look close. The unpleasant feelings are to be felt at least as much as the pleasant ones, otherwise we are suppressing them and the pendulum will swing with even more momentum to the side we have been avoiding.
If we want to free ourselves of these colourful, but challenging opposites of “doubt” and “trust”, of “joy” and “fear”, of “love” and “sadness”, we need to nourish the observer in ourselves.
When observing a feeling, without involving and without identifying with it, we can become a little bit more detached from the rising and falling tides of life.
Tryambakam, the Great Mantra of Death at Sound Healing Training
Our Mantra Healing teacher Swami Sanjeev teaches us the “Mahamrtyunjaya” Mantra also called “Tryambakam” Mantra. It is the great mantra to conquer death. We receive backround knowledge about Rudra, also known as Shiva, to whom this mantra is dedicated to. Another name for Shiva is Tryambakam, which means the three-eyed one in Sanskrit. The notion of having three eyes can also refer to the third eye chaktra. The Ajna Chakra is located in between the eyebrows and a center of intuition, imagination and foresight.
Since Shiva is known to be the sustainer of life, the Tryambakam mantra is used for attracting health. A very beautiful comparison is used in the Sanskrit wording. The ripening cucumber, letting go of its stalk, becomes the image of spiritual liberation. When we realize that we are going to face death and that our bodies will merge back into the earth; when we let go of our attachment to life, than we can become immortal in spirit.
For overcoming the fear of death, the chanting of the Tryambakam mantra is a perfect practice. This particular mantra is to be sung slowly and with the concentration on the third eye.
Mantras in general can be sung out loud, but also silently, inside. When pronouncing the words, we try to stay present in our awareness, on the pronounciation and the melody. In this way, mantra singing can lead us to trance like states, it can help us to relax our bodies and give rest to the mind.
Conclusion of the day: Laughing Meditation is the best therapy and an amazing way to start a course day. Indian stories, especially the one of the Bhakti devotee Meera, we got to hear today, are enchanting and entertaining and contain beautiful bits of truth. Our day went on with a meditation on our heart centres, namely the Anahata Chakra. Discovering the joy, the love and the vulnerability that sit in our chest, we open ourselves up to the whole universe. In our next session we receive feedback for the one-day workshop designs, we have been working out, and adapt and edit what we have written so far. We discover that one part in us is trusting -that we are able to lead workshops for example- and another part is concerned with doubt. The Tryambakam Mantram, by which we close our fourth day of Training, is all about the internal death, about renewing energy, about letting go, to make space for the birth of something new…
All is impermanent, everything transforms into something else. Feelings, people, ideas, life situations. Let go of the past, be with what is now.
Transition Time at the Sound Healing Training: Renewing our energy
On day 5, our teacher grant us a free day, so we can integrate the four days of intensive training. It is meant to be a day for self-practice and holiday. Some of us are writing down the answers to one of our homeworks: What makes us happy in life? What do you want in life? Why? How much? And with whom?
It feels good to have a day without fixes program, where our imagination is free to wander, where we have time to explore Arambol’s sandy beaches and market stands.
Time for integration is a very important aspect for learning and healing. The word integration comes from the Latin “integrare”, which means to renew, wiederherstellen, ergänzen. Integration is a moment of regeneration, from which new possibilities for treatment, learning and for being can spring from. It allows us to look back and see if our needs and wishes, were fulfilled and what changes happened in us. A moment of resting and reflection, after a healing session or a teacher taining, is necessary for noticing changes, for integrating processes on a mental level and to take the lesson you learned into your daily life. When working as a therapeut, teacher or healer it is also a good idea to leave yourself time between different classes or sessions, so you can renew your energy.
Conclusion of the day: A free day is a time of transition. It is the time for letting go of the last module and finding the power in ourselves, that we can be teachers of Sound Meditation and Nada Yoga that we want to be. We had a lot of time to just hang out at the beach, stroll around Arambol beach , sit in silence and talk with friends. It really feels like we recharged our batteries for the beginning of the Singing Bowl training, starting tomorrow.
