1. Singing Bowls are an intuitive and relaxing way for your students to let go of their thoughts, expectations and need to perform. Bathed in sounds, your students can learn how to enjoy and just be.
2. Expand your skills to attract a wider audience of students and find your unique niche as a teacher. 3. Learn how to design workshops and individual sessions with more freedom and creativity.
4. A sound bath is great for a celebrative start of your yoga class and a meditative closure. Let your Savasana become an inner journey and your yoga shala a sacred space.
5. Become a therapeut for both physical and mental issues. The singing bowls provide relief for numerous complaints, from headaches and joint problems to depression and anxiety.
6. Singing Bowls are a sensory experience, which will allow you to relate to your students on emotional, creative and energetic-spiritual levels.
7. Nada Yoga, or the yoga of sound, naturally guides the mind towards meditation and is thus a great addition to Asana, Pranayama and other Meditation practices.
8. Singing Bowls are great for integrating and letting sink in the effects of a physical practice. Especially after an hour or so of asanas, the body is opened up and softened to receive sounds and healing vibration.
7 reasons for alternative healers to join a singing bowl training:
1. The sound is a healing tool which unites the physical and the spiritual level. Its vibration is able to touch bones, muscles and liquids in the body, but it also affects the nervous system, the mind and the very essence of our soul.
2. Become a diverse healer and develop your vocation as a teacher and therapeut! Learn how to connect to your clients and students in more colourful and playful ways.
4. Learn how to structure and design a healing session effectively and with a holistic spirit-
5. Learn how you will manifest your healing profession in the world, doing what you love and sharing this passion with others.
6. Tune in to your own transformational process, learn how to ground, to elevate, to love and heal yourself first.
7. Develop your creative and musical skills, heighten your intuition.
8. Learn how you can support your clients in their mental, emotional and spiritual processes.
Opening our students up through Bhija Mantras at Singing Bowl Training
Before a sound healing session, we can prepare our students in different ways. One option is to do a sound meditation with them, inviting them to use their own voice and inner vibration, before the singing bowls touch their ears and bodies.
There are different mantras we can sing, that relate to the chakra wheels. They are called Bhija Mantras (which means seed mantra). There are also vowel sounds that connect to the chakras. For the heart chakra for instance the bhija mantra Sound is “Ha” and the Mantra “Yam”.
But what are these Bhija mantras actually good for?
• they activate a particular chakra, when it is needed for the treatment
• the create a connection with the Self and the world.
• they help you to let go of past negative emotions, which may be blocking the chakras
• they increase the level of energy in the body
• they unfold creative potential
To sum up, what we try to achieve before a sound healing session, is to open our students up.
Another way, one of the most beautiful ones is free dance or shaking. One very funny instruction Meditation Master Shiva Girish gave us for moving our bodies was: “Don’t make any part of your body jealous that they are not shaken.”
Singing Bowl Contact Massage at Tibetan Sound Healing Training in Goa
On day 2 of the Singing Bowl Training we learn about Bodywork. This is a great way to ground and relax the patient, before we take the vibration of singing bowls to their bodies. However we should check beforehand, if he or she is fine with physical touch.
Then we learn how to give contact the body with Tibetan Sound Bowls to give a healing treatment. There are different points on the body, where we can place the singing bowls and then send the vibration to the multiple layers through three hits. The points, on which we place the singing bowls are in alignment with the energy system of the chakras or the Meridians of traditional Chinese medicine.
When a singing bowl is positioned on top of the body, then the sound vibration stimulates all the body cells. This happens because the human body consists of 70% of water, and water is a great conductor of sound waves. When you throw a stone in a lake, it causes ripples on the water surface that expand in larger and larger circles. This image represents how sound waves move through the body and are able to reach blood, organs, flesh and even bones. In this way, vibrations can reach to places where no physio or massage therapist could ever reach.
Furthermore, Sound Bowl Therapy acitvates the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for the relaxation response in the body. Through the Singing Bowl’s vibration physical and energetical blockages caused by stress, disease or emotions from the past can be set free again.
How you can use Tibetan singing bowls to relax and heal yourself
Singing bowls can be easily used for self-therapy purposes. It is a safe and uncomplicated way, for grounding yourself and bringing healing to the parts of your body and sould which might need it. After a long, stressful day, the singing bowls can be a great resource for inner peace and relaxation. For this you do not even a sound healer every time you want to relax. Half an hour is already long enough to attain some results. Here’s how you can achieve that:
Lie down on a comfortable surface, like a thick mattress placed on the ground. You can also use a yoga mattress or any mat which keeps you off the hard floor. Place the bowl on any part of your upper body – chest, belly or pelvis- and then strike it softly with a mallet. Use a soft mallet, for a big bowl. Softer sounds are good for a start. The bass produced through big bowls brings instant peace to your mind, letting all thought fly away. You will feel the vibrations spreading all over your body, resonating and touching you deep inside. These vibrations will relax your stiff muscles and massage your body internally. Your ears will forward those vibrations straight to your brain and activate a relaxed state of mind.
Think of the sounds and vibrations coming from the bowl as an ocean of sound and you will start riding those sounds waves when you close your eyes. You can also lie down on your belly and keep the bowl on your lower back and try to strike it softly. In the beginning it may not be comfortable for you but once you get used to it, you will feel the effects instantly and will get comfortable slowly.
Different techniques of playing we learned at the Tibetan Singing Bowl Training
As you may know already, there are different techniques of playing the singing bowls.
Striking is the first one.
The best way to hear the sound vibrations from the Tibetan singing bowls, is to hit the bowl with a mallet. You can choose the mallet depending on the type of bowl you are using. Ideally you should hit a singing bowl perpendicularly to the center of the bowl: Hold the mallet between your thumb and the two fingers and hit it slightly at first. Try not to hit to too hard, as it will produce the unpleasant metallic sound which is quite harsh for the ears. With regular practice, you will figure out different angles and forces to hit the bowls. You can also wrap your mallet with a piece of cotton cloth, if it is not thick enough. A gong mallet, with a soft wollen envelopment is however an indispensary addition to your sound healing set, especially if you have high wall singing bowls and want to enjoy a big and deep vibration.
Rubbing the rim is another beautiful way of making the singing bowls sound:
Singing Bowls carry their name for a reason. Making singing bowls “sing” is a rather very simple process. You can achieve it by regular practice and by keeping a little bit of patience at the same time.
Basically you need a stick of hardwood for the mallet. Place the stick perpendicular to the rim of the bowl and press it firmly. Now, simply drag the stick along the rim in a circular motion outside the bowl. The motion might not be perfect at the beginning but with practice, you will be able to make it smooth. To be able to make them sing, you should use bowls with thicker metal. The ones with a thin surface will produce ringing along with singing. This can be a little annoying and is not the effect that we are looking for. As a general rule of thumb thicker metal gives the nicer the sound.
For Tibetan bowls to sing we need a solid and firm surface. It will be quite difficult, if you place the bowl on any cushion. Then it might be a better option to place it on your palm, keeping your hand straight and your fingers stretched out. The hand which is holding the mallet should be firm while rotating the stick along the rim, but also without tension, so the mallet can freely adapt to the rim of the bow. You do not alway do go around the singing bowls in full circles, you can also try out a half moon motion. With a little bit of practice the Tibetan bowls will unveil their magical singing voices for you!
Conclusion of the day: Opening yourself up is a process and necessary before every sound healing session. This is why we practice body preparation, like dancing and shaking daily. Today we also had Bhija Mantra Singing as a preparatory practice before a Tibetan Singing Bowl Session. It is great to produce some sounds yourself, before you go into a sound bath or a singing bowl contact massage. This is another thing we learned today: How to give individual healing sessions by contacting the singing bowls to the body. It was amazing to feel, what the singing bowl’s vibration feels like in the body. It really touches you deep inside, relaxes your physical body and brings alertness to your energetical being. Many of us participants in the training find that the singing bowls are an amazing ressource for happiness and relaxation. Therefore, we want to use this amazing tool of Contact Singing Bowl message also for self-therapy. Whenever we feel like we need to calm the mind or relax the body, we can just play the singing bowls for and on ourselves. Our practice of the different playing techniques is refining with every practice session. Now the Singing bowls sound and sing for us!
All in all, singing bowls are an intuitive practice, which brings us naturally into a state of meditation.
