After enjoying tasty Aloo Paratha, fruit salad and tea for breakfast, we learn about some Sanskrit concepts. The Sanskrit term Nada for instance signifies sound. But Nada is so much more than pure sound. The concept of Nada describes a hidden energy, the primordial essence of the cosmos which unites the inner and the outer worlds. Nada yoga is then the union with sound and through this vibration we are able to connect to the divine.
Next, Swami Sanjeev tells us about the benefits of pranayama. Pranayama is a compound Sanskrit word consisting of Prana (life energy) and Yama (control). Pranayama provides different techniques to control one’s breath and receive prana or life force from the universe. Some benefits are:
-it balances the active and passive qualities in the body
-it improves concentration (and is a great tool to sharpen your mind for meditation)
-it alleviates anxiety
-it improves blood circulation in the physical body and the flow of energy in the subtle body
-it helps to relax your body and mind
-it can be a relief for stress, depression
-it can even cure asthma, stomach problems, headaches and migraines
-it cleanses the 72.000 nadis in the energy body
After learning about the usefulness of Pranayama, we practice Brahmari Pranayama. The meaning of it is “the breathing of bees”. In this practice we emate a humming sound and withdraw our senses towards the inside. For this purpose the practicioner is closing his eyes and his ears with the fingers. Then he breathes through the nose and makes a loud and continuous humming noise, reverberating in the whole head, neck and shoulder area, and eventually expanding through the body. After practicing pranayama, sitting in silence allows the prana to spread through and integrate in the body.
We end this lesson by talking about the qualities that are useful for teaching. Every participants contributes what he considers the most important traits for a teacher: Compassion, Openness, Clarity, a loud but loving voice, Curiosity, Enthusiasm and many more…
Learning how to teach Sound Meditation, Humming and Anahata Nada
In this session we learn about the sounds of the Root and the Sacral chakra. The Root chakra is concerned with survival, the body, safety and basic needs. Often fear can be found in this chakra. The Sacral Chakra, with the sound of “O”, is all about feelings and emotions, mainly pleasure and guilt. In regard to the chakra sound meditation, Meditation Master Shiva Girish insists that a meditation should never be done on autopilot. When we change the tone and the rhythm of our voice when singing, we also encourage diversity in the sound meditation of our students. This variety in the pronounciation of sound is very important, in order for blockages to be released and awareness to be maintained.
Then, we as participants have some time to practice teaching ourselves. In groups of two, we are teaching Sound Meditation and Humming to each other. In the end, we give each other feedback. This was such a useful way to raise awareness about the details, which make up good teaching. For example a good teacher:
-interacts with his student. He has his eyes open, stays present with the student and gives instructions and corrections if needed.
-takes the student on a journey. Through his voice he is guiding the student. Precise instructions give the student clarity and help him to fully surrender to the practice.
We end our session with a meditation called Anahata Nada, which means “Inner Sounds” in Sanskrit. Afterwards Meditation Master Shiva Girish demonstrated and introduced this technique to us, we lie down an close our ears, listening inside. Then keep our listening awareness simultaneously at the inside and the outside. It was truly an experience to discover, that we have the capacity to listen to the inner sounds and the outer sound at the same time.
Resistance and Letting go in the Nada Yoga Sound Healing Teacher Training
First, we have a talk about the difficulties that might arise with students. Meditation Master Shiva Girish tells us that compassion is an important tool to deal with all kinds of students. Many students might have resistance towards the teaching. Everyone carries their baggage of knowledge of emotions and life history to the class. But how can we gently, but directly, ask our students to drop their baggage in front of the classroom door? Another metaphor which pictures the knowledgeable student is a full glass of water. How can you fill it with another drink, if the glass is already full? So it really is about learning how to empty your glass of water. Learning how to unlearn. Coming to class as a small child, dropping the story of our life, leaving all knowledge aside.
Master Shiva Girish shared another very poignant comparison: When cleaning the dustbin, you don’t examine each piece of trash, you empty it it one move. Similarly, when cleaning your mind, you should not get involved with the stories in your head. For the cleaning process to be effective, let go of your stories for once.
Then we enjoy a dance meditation, a great way to shake and wiggle off our baggages. Free dance is all about letting go of the dance moves, we usually do, when dancing in a club or at a social event. Here we are encouraged to enjoy, to stretch out, to dance for ourselves, with a smile and without judgement. In this meditation the music carried me away, I opened my wings and my eyes, and danced freely across the room, like a butterfly.
Perfection of Creation in “Purnamadaha” Mantra and benefits of chanting
In our last evening session, we repeat the mantras we learned the day before: “Asato Ma” and “Sahanaa Vavatu”. Then, our Swami Sanjeev teaches us the mantra “Purnamadaha Purnamidam”, another mantra from the Upanishads. This mantra states that perfection or fullness alway stays the same, even if you add or substract something from it. It is a magnificent mantra which touches the essential point that all is one. Everything around you is complete, you are complete and nothing can destroy this complete creation which we are witnessing. Even though the mantra was a tongue breaker at first, it became one of our favourites, because of its steady rhythm and wonderful meaning.
Chanting mantras is highly beneficial for these reasons:
-it reduces anxiety, depression and stress
-it attunes your being to the divine through
-the pronounciation of sacred Sanskrit sounds have a direct effect on the brain
-it is soothing
-it boosts your immunity
-it empowers and gives you self-confidence
-it helps you develop your intuition
Conclusion of the day: On our second day we learned about Pranayama, its benefits, and experience a specific type of breath control whihc includes the humming sound: Brahmari Pranayama. We discussed what qualities a teacher should embody. We did a sound meditation on the root and the sacral chakra sound. Then we had some teaching practice time, and learned how to guide such a sound or humming meditation for each other. The feedback here was very helpful to refine our teaching skills. We dived deep into the “Anahata Nada” Meditation, the meditation of inner sounds. We talk about the hindrances that may appear in the teacher-student relationship and how we can help our students to let go of past baggages and resistance. We repeated the mantras which we learned already and were taught the wonderful “Purnamadaha Purnamidam” mantra.
We had many different practices today, we travelled inwards with our awareness. The feeling of becoming one with the dance, one with the singing, one with the listening is the same. It does not matter which practice your are doing, as long as you are becoming one with it. This is what it is all about.
