From the 17th October to the 25th October the Nada Yoga Sound Healing and Singing Bowl Training takes place in the Arbour Hotel in Arambol.
In 2018 the participants for the first Sound Healing module are five women from India, Europe and the Middle East.
To inaugurate our course, three of us participants gather to decorate the meditation hall with rose buds and Ganesha flowers. With united forces we form a spiral in the center of the room. After enjoying breakfast together, we start with the opening ceremony. First we have a Body Awareness Dance and we learn about the necessity of physical preparation, before entering meditation. We experience that an opening dance is an amazing and celebrative way to start a workshop or a training, because it brings us into an open and a meditative state of mind.
Now we are ready to take in some introductory information about the training. We are handed out a schedule, get to know the teachers and our fellow participants.
In this session, we are then introduced to the sounds of “O” and “A”. Meditation Master Shiva explains to us that stress raises our breathing cycles and how meditation is able to lower them. Each and everyone then counts their own breath cycle and we have a meditation to go with it.
The Breathing Cycle is a powerful tool for a first diagnosis of a student’s condition. We can use the Breathing Cycle test in one-to-one sessions to see where our client is at. In a group workshop on the other hand, it can be a wonderful way to have a before and after comparison of the participants relaxation level. Then, our group moves on to more sound singing, sending the vibrations through our bodies and into the room. To close the session, our Singing Bowl teacher Vladimir takes us into a singing bowl meditation.
Mantra Singing Lesson “Asato Ma Sad Gamaya” from the Upanishads
Our Mantra Healing teacher Swami Sanjeev introduces the session by asking which mantras we already know. We dive a little bit into theory and philosophy, learning about Yantra, Mantra and Tantra. Swami Sanjeev then explains to us, that the repetition of mantra is creating a circuit in our head, which helps us to remove false layers and recognize our real, essential nature. For this purpose we we learn the mantra “Asato Ma Sad Gamaya” from the Upanishads.
The Upanishads are an ancient text, written in Sanskrit, which is part of the Vedas. The word Upanishad itself is a composed verb: Upa (near) – NiSad (sitting down). It refers to the student, who is sitting at his teacher’s side to receive his wisdom. The philosophy that is taught in the Upanishads is commonly referred to as Vedanta (meaning the end or highest purpose of knowledge). It is said that the Upanishads, with its Vedanta philosophy, contains the essence of all Vedas.
We learn the mantra by repeating it after our teacher; which is the traditional way to learn mantras. Each and every student explains the meaning of the mantra to the group and recites the verses on their own. Swami Sanjeev uses this opportunity to teach us the essentials of Vedic philosophy. The “Asato Ma” Mantra is showing that we human beings are caught in duality. Human beings are ignorant and trapped in their illusory realities. Therefore the mantra prays for guidance towards truth, light and immortality. This state of immortality signifies to be one with the whole cosmos. There, duality does not exist anymore, and the soul is free, merged in the everything.
Designing a group session, dancing and humming in the Nada Yoga Training
We learn a basic recipe on how to design a group session of 90 minutes. To begin a sound healing workshop, body preparation is a great start. This can be either a free dance, yoga asanas or some minutes of shaking. During free dance, we are moving the awareness to different parts of the body. This can help students to move out of their comfort zone and throw away their safety jackets. Our music has a crescendo and a diminuendo, which means that is is slowly building up to a peak and settling back down. In this way, the dance is gentle in the beginning, gradually liberating and meditative in the end.
While learning to design a group session, we also have the possibility to experience the different components. We are dancing together, with open and closed eyes and find out how beautiful it can be to just move, without any thoughts. We are singing sounds and deepen our chanting, making it louder, longer, until we are becoming one with the vibration.
At the end of the session, we learn about Humming, which is a Sound Meditation coming from the Buddhist Tibet. With closed lips, we vibrate the humming sounds in our bodies and expand them into the room. We also learn and practice how to be a voice of leading and how to guide our sounds towards the student.
Let me share some benefits specific to the humming technique:
-melts away tension in the shoulders, the neck, the head and the face
-initiates the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for relaxation
-your breathing rate is slowed down
-pacifies your thoughts and softens the body
-it has a soothing effect and promotes happiness inside
-helps you to sleep better
-carries away blockages and makes the energy circulate
Indian Philosophy, Emotional Balance and the Peace Mantra “Saha Navavatu”
We begin by talking about Indian literature, namely the Upanischads, the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahmasutras. Swami Sanjeev explains to us how the sannyasis, the spiritual seekers, lived in the past. In the ancient times, a person looking for spiritual instruction would spend 16 years at his teacher’s house, most often in the forest, secluded from society. In the morning he would to 6 hours of his sadhana, his spiritual practice. In the day time, 6 hours of karma yoga, of voluntary work would be on the student’s schedule. The evening time would be reserved for satsang or bhakti yoga (yoga of devotion).
We also learn about self-enquiry, which is probably the most important aspect of the spiritual journey. There are six obstacles that we may encounter on our way and which prevent us from seeing our true self: Kama (desire), Krodha (anger), Lobha (Greed), Moha (Delusion), Mada (Pride or Intoxication) and Matsarya (Envy).
Emotional balance is our next subject. Every participant can share, what emotional balance means to them. In my personal opinion, emotional balance is achieved, when a feeling that arises (for example sadness) can be felt consciously for a few moments and then passes by. On the other hand, when feelings are overwhelming or coming from the past, this would be a sign of emotional stuckness or trauma. Our Mantra healing teacher Swami Sanjeev invites us, to gives ourselves permission to cry and to feel everything which may arise. Remaining silently with the feeling and observing it, without identifying with it, is a good practice.
Finally, we learn the Peace Mantra “Saha Navavatu”. This is a beautiful mantra, praying for protection, not only for ourselves, but also for the people surrounding us and even the whole of humanity! This mantra is also related to learning. Therefore it is used very often as a joint prayer for students and teachers. It asks for the students’ and the teacher’s learning to be purposeful and luminous and that hate may never arise in this relationship.
Conclusion of the day: The opening ceremony with flowers and dance was a beautiful and celebrative to start our training. At the same time, Meditation Master Shiva Girish used the opportunity to explain to us and make us experience the importance of bodily preparation, before one gives an introductory talk or before a meditatio. On this day, we also learned about the breathing cycles and how they relate to our stress management and we get a first feeling for sound meditation and the relaxing effects of the singing bowls. We learned our first mantra, “Asato Ma Sad Gamaya” and found out about the non-dualistic philosophy of the Upanishads: All is one. The design of a group workshop is not a mistery to us anymore, and we were introduced into some components of it already, namely dancing and humming. In our Mantra session we talked about such diverse topics as Indian philosophy, emotional balance and the Sanskrit pronounciation and meaning of the Peace Mantra “Saha Na Vavatu”.
This really was a lot of input for the first day of training!
