Goa is a wonderful place to have a teacher training, and I have fallen in love with Arambol. The beach is only a 2 minute walk and greenery is just outside around the corner. Fruit stands sell delicious papaya, bananas and avocados. The Arambol Market street offers everything a hippie’s heart could desire. And after a long training, Love Temple is the perfect spot to hang out with a smoothie or an abundant Thali, listening to the soothing sound of the waves…
On our second day, Mantra healing teacher Swami Sanjeev teaches us about Indian philosophy. We learn that the morning time, from 5 am to 8 am, and especially the time before the sun rises, is ideal for spiritual practices. At this time of the day, the planet is receiving energy, and when we do our sadhana (spiritual practice) then, it can energize us for the whole day. The middle of the day is ideal for karma yoga (work without personal interest) and the evening time (from 6 to 9pm) is meant for celebration, satsang (sharing of truth) or bhajan (singing devoted to God).
We are also introduced to the Yamas and Niyamas of the Yoga Sutras:
The Yamas are behaviors relate to our interaction with other people and the world:
-Ahimsa: Non-violence
-Satya: Truthfulness
-Asteya: Non-Stealing
-Brahmacharya: Non-Excess
-Aparigraha: Lack of Greed
The Niyamas are concerned with our inner world. The read as follows:
-Saucha: Purity
-Santosha: Contentment
-Tapas: Self-discipline
-Svadhyaya: Self-study and exploration
-Ishvara Pranidhana: surender to God
Swami Sanjeev also teaches us some body release techniques: The first one uses vigorous breath, with the second one we throw away all fears and negative thoughts and finally we also do some jumping. After this physical preparation, we are ready for 30 minutes of Om Meditation. The sacred Om sounds wanders through our bodies to release blockages and to heal where it is needed. The meditation is followed by a silent meditation and then Shavasana to integrate the powerful healing. All of us felt that 30 minutes of Om singing was a challenge on the one hand, but also a transformative and rewarding experience.
Willpower is a life changer, for yourself and your students
We begin with a talk about the mind and its habit. Then Meditation Master Shiva Girish introduces us to a Hatha Yoga Kriya, which is also a Root Technique. This Samkalpa Kriya uses the will power of our mind to work on inner transformation. Each student formulates together with Master Shiva Girish a simple, positive statement that will become his daily practice in the following 21 days. This is exactly the number of days needed, to break a habit. The Kriya is practiced lying down. Breathing in you are closing your nostrils and your mouth. You hold your breath and repeat the statement until you feel the urge to breathe out. Then you repeat the statement a few more times, still holding your breath, and then you exhale slowly out. The same process is done for the exhalation. In total you repeat your positive affirmation 8 to 10 times. You should not change your statement, but practice the same one phrase for 21 days continuously. Some of our positive statements were: “I want to go deeper in my meditation”, “I am content with myself” or “I accept myself as I am”.
Meditation Master Shiva Girish then gives us a very straightforward task. We should write down 4 things we want, 5 reasons why we want it, and then specify how much we want it and with whom we want it. Then, we also receive some useful tips on how to design a one-to-one session with an intention. The following questions can be very useful to bring clarity into a studen’s’ or client’s quest:
-What do you want?
-What makes you happy?
-What stops you from doing it?
Meditation Master Shiva Girish also gives us some tips, on how to make a celebration out of a group session. Holding hands while chanting Om is one option. Ending with a dance is another way. Or we could even invite your students to (respectfully) touch, hug or give compliments to each other.
“Gayatri Mantra” in the Nada Yoga and Sound Healing Training in Goa
In this session Swami Sanjeev teaches us the “Gayatri Mantra” from the Rig Veda. It is a universal hymn to to the Sun and divinity in all forms. It prays for peace in the all three realms: on the physical spere (also represented by the element earth), on the intermediate plane of prana (air element) and in the realm of divine consciousness (heaven). This trinity can be observed in the universe, but it also manifests in the human being: As the physical body, life energy and the soul. In the Vedas, the physical and the spiritual are intimately connected. This is way the physical manifestation (for example the Sun) and symbolic meaning (Sun as the creator of life or divine consciousness).
The Gayatri Mantra also has a threefold structure. First the divine is praised on all levels of existence. Then we meditate upon the splendid radiance of the Sun.. Finally we ask the divine Sun to illumine our own intellect.
The Gayatri Mantra is a bridge between the universe and the human being. We let ourselves be inspired by the force of creation and merge into oneness.
The Gayatri Mantra is also known to attract prosperity and to bring relief from disease. Ideally, it should be chanted three times a day.
After we learned and experienced the effects of the Gayatri Mantra on ourselves, our Mantra healing teacher Sanjeev also gives us options on how to design a Mantra Workshop or Session. The mantra could be sung either in a seated position or while dancing. This first stage would take 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of silence and 10 minutes of Savasana.
Journey to sounds, chakras and ourselves at Nada Yoga Teacher Training
At the end of the day, Meditation Master Shiva Girish entrusts us a quite challenging homework. We are to design the schedule and concept for a one-day workshop of 6 hours. The intention here is to prepare us to become ready to teach. Bearing this in mind, the homework is a challenge we are ready to take.
In the late evening session of our a third training day, a new teacher comes to the Shala to share his knowledge with us. Manjeet’s class starts with a meditation on the sounds composing Om: A U M. This sacred sound represents the essence. It is a symbol for the undying consciousness in everyone of us. The three differents sounds that create the nasal Om are first an A coming from the back of the thorat. Then follows a U created at the palatum, the roof of the mouth. Finally the M is a humming sound produced with closed lips. It is not a coincidence, that Om is constiting out of 3 sounds. The trinity can stand for either Earth, Atmosphere and Heaven; Sattva, Rajas and Tamas; Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu; or Waking State, Dream State and Deep Sleep. Om is guiding us back to our origin, to the source, where we already are complete.
Manjeet takes us on a walking meditation, in which we are focusing on the sounds of our feet. After walking, slow and fast, forwards and backwards, we are invited to lie down. Manjeet then takes us on a journey to the chakras. This meditation is called Active Chakra Mantra Meditation and lasts about 30 minutes. It is a varied practice which engages the physical body and guides the awareness to the 7 spiritual abodes of the chakras. We are looking inside -with colour- and speaking out the sounds of the various energy wheels. After meditating on one chakra, we receive its affirmation. In my own word, they read as follows:
I am grounded, I feel the pleasure to create, I am empowered, I am love, I am liberated, I am guided by intuition and, being all of this, there is no doubt that we all are: One.
The Active Chakra Mantra Meditation has a deeply relaxing effect on the body, but it also pacifies the mind. Since multiple points of concentration are used, there is not a lot of space for thoughts or drifting off. It is the balance of focusing the awareness and letting it rest, that brings true peace of mind in this practice.
Conclusion of the day:
We started our day with a philosophy lesson and a full 30 minutes of Om Meditation. This meditation was one of the most intense experiences we had with sound singing. Afterwards we felt internally energized and deeply relaxed in the body. On this day Meditation Master Shiva Girish gave us a Samkalpa Kriya, which is an exercise using the willpower to change your inner attitude. We were also given a big homework, to set intentions for our lifes, and we learned how we can guide our clients and students towards what the really want in life, towards happiness and the fulfilment of their dreams… The Gayatri Mantra of prosperity was our subject in mantra class. It has an entangling, almost hypnotizing effect to sing it over and over again. We receive another homework, namely to design the structure and concept for a full-day 6-hours group workshop. For our last session we are already pretty exhausted as a group, but our new teacher Manjeet Ji still achieves to take us on a journey to sounds and chakras.
As a group it was a demanding, but an inspiring day. We went beyond what we felt, was possible. When I left the shala, I felt a unshaken feeling of acceptance.
